Alexander McCall Smith is the author of the huge international phenomenon The No. 1 Ladiesâ Detective Agency series. His other recent books include The Sunday Philosophy Club, the Portuguese Irregular Verbs series, The Girl Who Married a Lion, and 44 Scotland Street. He was born in Zimbabwe but has spent most of his life in Scotland, where he now lives. He worked for a time as a law professor at the University of Botswana and still returns regularly to that country.
